The Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC) requires current CPR and AED certification for all certified athletic trainers. Illinois High School Association (IHSA) mandates CPR/AED certification for all athletic trainers covering interscholastic sports. NATA standards recommend BLS-level CPR with specific training in sports emergency response, including heat illness, concussion, spinal injury, and sudden cardiac arrest in athletes. Our athletic trainer-focused classes cover exactly what you need for your credential, your employer, and your athletes.

What Chicago Athletic Trainers Say About Our Classes

5.0 from 800+ athletic trainers

“I needed to recertify 12 athletic trainers across our district before fall sports started. They coordinated everything — scheduling, equipment, rosters, and same-day cards. The sports-specific scenarios were exactly what our ATs need for Friday night football coverage.”

Mike T., ATC
Head Athletic Trainer, Chicago Public Schools

“The BLS renewal was the most efficient I've done. The instructor was a former college athletic trainer who understood our specific needs — from football helmet removal to basketball SCA response. Worth every minute away from practice.”

Sarah K., MS, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer, NCAA Division I Program

“My clinic requires BLS for all clinical staff. The First Aid component covered exactly what we see — ACL tears, fractures, concussions, and environmental emergencies. The instructor clearly understood sports medicine practice.”

Common Questions

Athletic Trainer Certification FAQ

All certified athletic trainers in Illinois need current AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers certification as required by the Board of Certification (BOC). Athletic trainers covering interscholastic sports also need CPR/AED certification per IHSA rules. Those covering outdoor sports should also have First Aid certification. Collegiate ATs may need ACLS depending on their institution's requirements.

AHA BLS certification is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. We recommend renewing 60 days before expiration to avoid compliance gaps that can affect your BOC credential, employer requirements, and state licensure.

BLS (Basic Life Support) is the healthcare provider-level certification required by BOC and most employers. It covers two-rescuer CPR, bag-mask ventilation, and team resuscitation dynamics. Heartsaver CPR + AED is the layperson-level course. Athletic trainers should take BLS, not Heartsaver, to meet their professional requirements.

Yes — athletic trainers covering outdoor sports, summer camps, and field events should have CPR + First Aid certification. First Aid covers wound care, fracture management, heat illness, environmental emergencies, and concussion recognition — all critical skills for athletic training practice.

BLS for Healthcare Providers is $85 (initial) or $65 (renewal). CPR + First Aid is $95–$145. AED and Emergency Action Plan training is $75. Group rates for athletic departments start at $75 per person for 6 or more staff. BLS + First Aid combo packages offer additional savings.

Yes — we specialize in on-site group training for athletic departments of any size. We bring all equipment to your school or training facility, schedule around your sports calendar, and provide complete BOC and IHSA compliance documentation. Volume pricing and EAP development included.

Yes — we offer EAP development and review as part of our athletic department group training packages. EAPs are a NATA best practice and required by many state associations. We help your department develop venue-specific EAPs for each gymnasium, stadium, and practice facility.
