CPR Certification Requirements for Illinois Schools

Illinois has specific guidelines and recommendations for CPR training in schools, daycares, and athletic programs. Here is what you need to know.

Illinois School Code

The Illinois School Code recommends that all school personnel be trained in CPR and AED use. Many districts now require it as a condition of employment.

DCFS Daycare Requirements

Daycare centers, preschools, and before/after-school programs must have staff certified in pediatric first aid and CPR per DCFS licensing standards.

IHSA & IESA Sports

The Illinois High School Association and Elementary School Association strongly recommend CPR-certified personnel at all athletic events and practices.

AED Mandates

Illinois requires AEDs in all public schools. Staff must be trained to use them — our classes include hands-on AED training for every participant.

“Jonathan and Barb did an amazing job covering a lot of material in a relatively short amount of time. Presentation of the material is clear and left me feeling more prepared to act in the event of an emergency. It was engaging, hands on and well-executed.”

Common Questions

CPR for Teachers — Frequently Asked Questions

While Illinois does not currently mandate CPR certification for all teachers at the state level, the Illinois School Code strongly recommends it. Many individual school districts — including Chicago Public Schools and most suburban districts — now require CPR and AED training as a condition of employment. Additionally, coaches, PE teachers, and school nurses often face specific certification requirements from athletic associations and licensing boards.

Most teachers and school staff need Heartsaver CPR + AED certification, which covers adult and child CPR, AED use, and choking response. School nurses and health office staff typically need BLS for Healthcare Providers. Coaches and athletic staff may need CPR + First Aid depending on district requirements. We can help you determine the right certification for your specific role.

Yes. On-site school CPR training is one of our most popular services. We bring all mannequins, AED trainers, and materials directly to your school. We can train in your gymnasium, cafeteria, media center, or auditorium. Sessions can be scheduled during in-service days, before/after school hours, or on weekends to minimize classroom disruption.

Individual teacher CPR classes start at $85 for Heartsaver CPR + AED. For school-wide training, we offer significant volume discounts: small groups (6-15 staff) from $65/person, mid-size groups (16-30) from $55/person, and large districts (31+) at custom rates. All on-site training includes equipment, materials, and same-day AHA cards at no extra charge.

Yes. Our American Heart Association CPR and First Aid certifications meet or exceed all Illinois state recommendations for school personnel. Our cards are accepted by Chicago Public Schools, suburban districts, DCFS for daycare licensing, and the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) for athletic programs.

AHA CPR certification is valid for 2 years from the issue date. We recommend that schools track expiration dates and schedule renewal training before cards lapse. We offer renewal classes that are shorter and less expensive than initial certification, making it easy for districts to maintain 100% compliance year after year.

Absolutely. We regularly work with school districts to certify staff across multiple buildings. We can schedule consecutive days at different schools, or send multiple instructor teams to train several schools simultaneously. Contact us for a custom district-wide proposal with volume pricing.

Yes. We offer Pediatric First Aid + CPR classes specifically designed for daycare centers, preschools, and before/after-school programs. This certification meets DCFS licensing requirements in Illinois and covers infant and child CPR, choking, allergic reactions, and common childhood emergencies.
