If you're a nurse, physician, EMT, respiratory therapist, or any other healthcare professional in Chicago, your AHA BLS certification needs to be renewed every 2 years. Missing your renewal date can affect your employment status, hospital privileges, and compliance requirements.

What Does BLS Renewal Cover?

BLS renewal covers the same core content as initial certification: high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants; AED use; relief of foreign-body airway obstruction; and team-based resuscitation dynamics. The renewal course is typically shorter than initial certification — about 3.5 hours.

Can I Do BLS Renewal Online?

The AHA offers a blended learning option (HeartCode BLS) where you complete the cognitive portion online and then attend a brief in-person skills check. However, many hospitals require the full in-person course. Check with your employer before choosing the blended option.

How Far in Advance Should I Renew?

We recommend renewing 30–60 days before your expiration date. Your new 2-year certification period starts from your renewal date, not your expiration date — so renewing early doesn't cost you any time.

What to Bring to Your BLS Renewal Class

Bring your current BLS card (or a photo of it), comfortable clothing you can move in, and arrive a few minutes early. That's it. We handle everything else.

BLS renewal classes available weekdays, evenings, and weekends across Chicago. Book your spot — classes fill fast.
